One of the most common question we often hear when it comes to baby formula is: What about goat milk powder formula? Is it really better than cow’s milk formula? And which is the best one ?
In general, goat milk formula can be a very good option for babies – especially for babies who just aren not able to tolerate cow’s milk formula well.
So Is goat milk formula healthier than cow’s milk?
The answer is simple: It depends. Goat milk can be better, but a lot of factors will determine whether it’s really better for your baby.
1 Goat milk & cow milk are similar nutritionally: Goat milk is a little bit higher in some vitamins and minerals, but cow’s milk has more folic acid and B12 than goat milk. This doesn’t matter for formula though, because all formulas are fortified and they include the right balance of vitamins & minerals to compensate for breast milk.
2 Organic standards: This is much important – but neither goat or cow milk wins here – it actually depends on the farm & the producer.
3 Tolerability: Goat milk is quite often said to be a ‘hypoallergenic’ alternative to cow’s milk as many families stated that it’s less troublesome for their babies who are sensitive to cow’s milk proteins.
4 Protein composition: Goat milk powder formulas adapt their protein to be safe and thus make it suitable for little ones and they add whey to balance this out.
The ultimate question is: What goat milk formula is the best?
There aren’t many options available on goat’s milk formula as there are for cow’s milk. But there are a few high quality goal milk formulas. The top four that I have found are Holle Goat, NannyCare,Kabrita USA and Sammy’s Milk.
Of these formulas, Holle Goat is by far the best goat milk powder formula on the market today.
If I was going to give my own child a goat milk baby formula, I would choose the Holle Goat. Holle is unique because it contains the most beneficial type of palm oil. It is certified glyphosate-free and adds whey protein to model the whey-casein ratio of breast milk. It also adds lactose to model the carbohydrates in breastmilk (vs. maltodextrin which reduces quality formulas use). Most of all, it has no glucose syrup solids added. It has DHA/ARA added.
Holle is also offering 10% off all orders.
Here are more details on what to look for in a goat’s milk formula!
Ideally organic, or at least non-GMO/Free-range: If the milk is imported from Germany or NZ that’s even better, because you would end up with higher standards for the treatment of animals and the best processing of milk. Fact: Holle Goat milk powder is the only formula that’s officially organic.
A formula that simulates breast milk with their whey/casein ratio: to avoid all digestion issues, constipation, gas, any kind of discomfort in babies! This can be actually accomplished by: a whey/casein ratio similar to breastmilk. Since breast milk contains a lot more whey than casein – and goat milk powder also contains much more casein than whey – it’s crucial that formula adds goat whey protein.
Much Addition of lactose, to stimulate breast milk. Do you know that Breast milk contains more than one and a half times the amount of lactose as goat milk. So, it’s really essential that goat’s milk formula adds carbohydrates to meet babies’ needs.
No synthetic ingredients like taurine, L-Carnitine etc are used.
No maltodextrin or syrup solids are used.
DHA/ARA and Prebiotics added.
Plus the right composition of fatty acids (this just saves you from the time & energy to supplement yourself!) Since 20-25% of the fat in breast milk is palmitic acid, which mostly exists in a specific structure, it’s necessary that the fat in goat milk infant formula must simulate this structure.
(Note: Holle is the only formula that uses a fat blend with beta palmitate. This blend is originally designed to simulate the fat which is naturally found in breast milk. Holle does use hexane to extract their DHA/ARA, but it also assures that there is no hexane present in their final product.)
So how do the other formulas measure up?
The table below describes the best three goat milk powder formulas available on the market today. You can check on the product name to find a reliable distributor of the formula.
Nanny Care
No Non-GMO/Organic certifications, but their milk is sourced from Germany which has much higher standards than the US. There are no soy based ingredients, maltodextrin, and only two of the synthetic ingredients that I recommend avoiding. They are ranked lower than Holle because they don’t have a whey-casein ratio as close to breastmilk as Holle. Also they don’t have DHA or prebiotics added in them.
Holle Goat
This is the only officially organic formula available! Even though it’s organic, it does have a whey-casein ratio similar to breastmilk, and I have heard it can constipate babies less than Kabrita or NannyCare. It also uses maltodextrin and palm oil, which I really like. And it has DHA or prebiotics added.
Sammy’s Milk
They use molasses instead of lactose which I don’t really find much attractive – since that’s just added sugar. They had some recall a while back, so I have been a little skeptical about it. But still they are free range and Non GMO, they don’t have palm oil or soy added. Plus they don’t use hexane to extract their DHA. So it’s kind of a toss up between whether you prefer organic or non-hexane extracted DHA + no palm oil when you are comparing Sammy’s Milk to Holle!

How To Choose Baby Care Products -Tips & Tricks
Becoming parents for the first time can be really overwhelming as you want to give and do the best you can for your new born baby. On becoming parents you come to realize that babies are not able to use the same products like us as their bodies are in a developing stage and hence they are vulnerable in so many ways. Thus, baby products are introduced which are actually much safer for your child because they are made in a way which will never harm your child’s body in any manner possible. But if you have checked already, you must have found that the market is flooded with a number of baby products which come in so many attractive shapes, sizes, colours & even features and thus it becomes luring to parents who tend to stack up these products in large numbers. But at the same time you should tend to think a lot about safety that comes along with these products.
Ways of Choosing Best Baby Care Products
Here are some of the tips and tricks which will actually help you in choosing the right baby products wisely.
Talk with your paediatrician: The best you can do is that you should talk with your paediatrician before buying any kind of baby care products for your newborn (as it’s too hard to ignore a doctor’s advice). A lot of doctors, In fact, themselves advise you to use such kinds of products, as they will not bring any harm to your little ones. In addition to their medical training, paediatricians regularly encounter a lot of different products in their daily practice which then enables them to tell which products are right for your young one and which are not. Before bringing your baby home, do have a talk first with the doctor about the products to be purchased for the suitability of your child, be it soaps, lotions or shampoos.
Understand common toxins: While you are shopping for baby products, you should either do some research on your own or talk with the doctor about certain common toxins which are present in the products. Also, while shopping, you can have a look at the labels of the products, which mentions all kinds of chemicals that are used to create the product. In this way you would be able to avoid those products containing such harmful ingredients while choosing the ones which are best and suitable for your child as recommended by doctors.
Choosing products designed for babies: Soaps, shampoos & lotions specially made for babies are much milder and gentle than the regular products. It is advised that you should prefer these mild products & fragrance free soaps and lotions as they will help in keeping your infant’s skin soft, healthy and free from any kind of infection since they are made from organic components and are also free from carcinogenic substances.
Bath products: While choosing a baby bath sponge, you must opt for cotton based sponges or cotton towels which are not harsh on your baby’s skin as the child’s skin can be very sensitive at this time and prone to rashes.
Diapers: Use biodegradable diapers for your newborn baby as they have high absorption properties which helps in keeping your child’s skin smooth and soft and avoid any rashes.
Chew toys: As your child starts growing, they will begin teething which is why you should buy a handful of chewing toys for your little ones. These toys will come in handy and are in a variety of shapes, sizes & colours. But don’t get lured by such baby care products and try to opt for a plastic free toy that will be safer for your baby as they will be putting it in their mouth most of the time. Chew toys made from non-toxic materials can be chosen for your infant’s health.
Feeding bowels: Just like other baby products, feeding bowels also come in different shapes, sizes and colours & are made of plastic. Though they tend to last for a long time, plastic isn’t actually safe for your baby. So, If possible, avoid the use of such plastic bowels to feed your baby.
As the list of baby care products is an endless one, thus parents are advised to purchase only from reputed manufacturers and stores (i.e. Famous Brands). You might see a lot of advertisements that can be luring in many ways but never give in to your temptations as you don’t want to be misguided when it comes to your child’s health. So, be a discerning parent and invest your time and money in the right baby products for your little one growth and development.

Cow Milk Powder Formula for Babies
Many of us have so many fond memories of being fed cow’s milk when we were kids. This delicious and nutritious drink was often offered by itself, or with cornflakes & oats, or in milkshakes, etc. to kids. Since a baby’s digestive system isn’t much developed as compared to a ten-year old’s, one wonders if it is the ideal drink for an infant. Here we are going to discuss if cow’s milk is suitable for babies or not and when it can be introduced to them.
Let Us Start With What Is Cow's Milk Formula and Its Advantages over Cow's Milk?
Cow milk powder formula is created from the proteins of cow's milk. The protein is altered so that it becomes easier to digest for babies. Until children reach age 1, their body simply cannot handle the high levels of protein, sodium & potassium present in cow's milk, according to the AAP.
Cow milk formula is really much similar to breast milk and is often touted and acclaimed for its good and incredible balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat.
You can buy it either ready-made or in powdered form that requires it to be mixed with water.
Cow milk powder formula is actually one of the best and most commonly used formulas for infants. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also recommends this type of
iron-fortified formula to all if breastfeeding is not an option available.
Though the majority of babies prosper on this particular type of formula, it is possible that some infants might do much better on a different type of formula. Experts say, if your baby spits up one or two times after taking this formula, never switch by without giving it a thought to an alternative like soy infant formula. Instead of it, talk to your pediatrician. Remember: spitting up does not always mean that your child can't tolerate cow milk formula
When to Provide Cow’s Milk to Kids?
Once your baby is past one year old, you can provide him whole cow's milk or reduced-fat (2 percent) milk, but make sure that he has a balanced diet of solid foods (i.e. cereals, vegetables, fruits, and meats). But you need to limit his intake of milk to 1 quart (about 32–36 oz.) per day. Any more than this can result in too many calories and may decrease his appetite for the other food items. If your baby is still not eating a broad range of solid foods, then you need to talk to your pediatrician about the best nutrition for him.
At this certain age, children need a higher fat content, which is why whole vitamin D milk is recommended for most of the infants after one year of age. If your child is either overweight or at a risk for being overweight, or if there is heredity of obesity, high blood pressure, or heart disease, your pediatrician might recommend 2 percent milk (reduced-fat) instead.
You should not give your baby 1 percent (low-fat) or non-fat (skimmed) milk before his 2nd birthday. Also, nonfat, or skimmed, milk provides a high concentration of protein & minerals and should not be given to infants or toddlers under the age of two years. After two years of age, you need to discuss your child's nutritional needs, including choice of low-fat or non-fat milk products by talking with your pediatrician.
Effects of Cow's Milk Formula
Here are some of the symptoms of Allergy to Cow's Milk:
With the help of latest studies, it is found that about 2 to 3 percent of babies have a cow's milk allergy, which happens when the baby's immune system reacts poorly to the cow milk protein. It can also be developed in breastfed as well as formula-fed toddlers and many children will outgrow the allergy. Symptoms of milk allergy in babies include:
- Frequently spitting up
- Vomiting
- Colic-like symptoms, which involves excessive crying and irritation after feedings
- Diarrhea
- Blood in stool
- Poor weight gain
- Hives
- A scaly skin rash
- Coughing or wheezing
- Watery eyes and stuffy nose
- Trouble breathing and swelling of mouth and throat
- Anaphylaxis: Life-threatening allergic reaction
It's also important to note that milk allergy is really different from milk tolerance or lactose intolerance, which occurs when a breastfed or formula-fed baby is not able to digest the sugar in cow's milk (lactose).
Some Of The Alternatives to Cow Milk Formula
If your baby is not able to tolerate the protein in cow's milk, there are plenty of options.
Acid Reflux Formulas
Lactose-Free Formulas
Hypoallergenic Infant Formulas
Where to Shop?
